MUSICONTARIO COMMUNITIES CONNECT: FOLK MUSIC ONTARIO
THE MGMT PANEL: DIY OR SIGN A DEAL WHEN 20% OF NOTHING IS FOLK ALL?!
Presented in conjunction with Music Managers Forum (MMF) Canada
October 21, 2016, 2:30-3:30PM @ Delta Ottawa City Centre, Frontenac Room
(101 Lyon Street N., Ottawa, ON)

MusicOntario Communities Connect is all about bridging the gaps between Ontario’s vibrant music markets! During our Community Development Research Project (CDRP), we asked musicians, artists and industry professionals across the province what types of support and education they hoped to have access to regionally (you can read the full results at www.music-ontario.ca).

Folk and roots music cover a unique terrain in the music industry, and in some ways there are fewer rules to follow or paradigms to aspire to, and the community itself provides a solid professional support system.

However, what’s the next step when an artist hits a wall and begins to struggle to handle the DIY workload, or is unsure of how to break through to the next stage of their career? It’s an overwhelming crossroads in any artist’s professional development: is it time to find a manager, or to devise new strategies for delegating tasks and managing the both the biz and creative workloads at hand?

This panel is for up-and-coming artists, both DIY and artist entrepreneurs, as well as those who are looking to expand their teams with a dedicated manager. Featuring both industry veteran managers and successful, experienced self-managed artists, this session will help you get a lay of the land ahead and assess the best road to take.
