Last week, the City of Toronto issued a job posting for a Sectoral Development Officer (Music). According to the job posting, "the Music Sector Development Officer leads, develops, and ensures effective delivery of economic development sector-specific programs and activities to enhance the local and international competitiveness of the City’s music sector and facilitates economic growth, export development and job creation." It is expected that the Music Development Officer will work under newly minted Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries, Zaib Shaikh.
The position of Music Development Officer joins the ranks of other key sectors who have development officers: film, finance, green-tech, biotech, education, tourism, fashion & design, food & beverage manufacturing and production, and information, communication & technology. It marks the latest efforts to brand Toronto as a "music city", focused on emphasizing its economic contributions to the overall economy while strengthening it.
The posting, which will be closing on Monday July 21, can be accessed here.

Following up on an earlier story we were watching, the vaunted Sam The Record Man sign has finally, officially found a new home at the top of the city-owned 277 Victoria Street Building. Based on the advice provided by the City's Planning and Growth Management Committee at a June 19 meeting, City Council voted to have the sign reassembled and installed at its new location, will all of the installation, operation and maintenance costs being taken care of by Ryerson University. In that same motion, the City also gave the go-ahead to city staff to start examining funding sources for a potential Toronto Music City sign to be placed anchoring the Sam The Record Man sign.
