Toronto Arts Facts: Key Statistics About Arts & Culture in Toronto
The Toronto Arts Council just released a report called Toronto Arts Facts that provide some key data and statistics on the "scope, power and impact of the arts in Toronto". The report focused on 3 key themes: the role that art plays in the city's economy, in the city's communities, in addition to the role that it plays in people's lives.
Here are some stats you should know:
- On an annual basis, arts & culture contribute $11.3 billion to Toronto's GDP.
- Ontario ranks 3rd in North America's top entertainment and media economies, behind California and New York. Toronto employs 174,000 people in the cultural sector, and is home to 93% more artists than any other Canadian city.
- The non-profit arts sector brings in approximately $8.26 in earned revenues for every $1 invested by the City.
- These results are promising, particularly when you take into account that Toronto spends far less per capita on arts, culture and heritage than cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa.
- Four times more tourists come to Toronto for culture than for sports - which is good for business. Overnight arts and culture tourists outspent other tourists at a 2-to-1 rate, spending $667 per trip on average.
- Furthermore, Torontonians and Ontarians believe in the economic spillover effects of government investment into the arts. 81% of Ontario residents believe that government should invest in the arts, while 80% of Toronto residents believe that municipal investment in art in public spaces will boost the local economy.
