MusicOntario Member Spotlight: Afrofest Sudbury
If you’re looking for a festival that’s all about community, culture, and incredible talent, we’d like to introduce you to this month’s member spotlight: Afrofest Sudbury.
Founded in 2018 by Bayode Gegeoju, alongside co-founders Tonye Oriakhi and Shade Onajobi, Afrofest Sudbury is a not-for-profit cultural organization dedicated to celebrating and sharing African culture through music, food, dance, fashion, art, and craft. What began as a grassroots idea has grown into one of Northern Ontario’s most vibrant and anticipated cultural events.
More About Afrofest Sudbury
At its heart, Afrofest Sudbury is about bringing people together.
Each summer, the outdoor festival takes over Bell Park for a joyful, family-friendly celebration featuring live performances, a colourful costume parade, face painting, vendor booths, and activities for both kids and adults. It’s a space where culture is shared, creativity is celebrated, and everyone feels welcome.

A Platform for Artists and Creatives
Supporting artists (especially emerging Afro-Canadian talent) is one of Afrofest Sudbury’s top priorities.
Since launching, the festival has continued to expand its programming to create meaningful opportunities for musicians, bands, dancers, visual artists, businesses, and community organizations. Afrofest also serves as a placemaker, helping both emerging and established African artists connect with new audiences across Northern Ontario and beyond.
Afrofest Sudbury is currently accepting artist submissions, offering performers a chance to be part of this dynamic and community-driven festival.

Workshops, Vendors, and Community Programs
Since 2022, Afrofest Sudbury has partnered with the Carpenters’ Union Local 2486 to offer wood and art workshops focused on creativity, Afrocentric design, and hands-on skill development. Open to participants of all ages, these workshops have produced art pieces that become part of the festival experience
The festival also proudly works with an amazing lineup of vendors each year. While every vendor brings something special, a few crowd favourites include Naija Taste Canada, Presotea, E & M Catering, Oceanspice, Zidah Treats, Chezzies Patties, and Mien Moh, to name just a few.
